![]() If the part # started with 111 (Standard), then I would agree with you. ![]() The problem with that assumption is that Euro-spec Deluxe beetles had front discs and 113 = part first used on Deluxe beetle. Maybe he just snapped cause his car sucked I've restored a large number too, but I don't toot my horn quite as loud. Very well, however the Bently specifically points out the differences between a dual circuit master cylinder for drum brakes and for disc brakes.Ĭertified Mechanic by the State of Michigan in 1977Ĭertified Hunter Wheel Alignment Master Technician 1986 spec beetles retained front drums through their entire production life. The replacement dual-circuit master cylinder for 1967-74 ghias has the part number 113-611-015.Ī 113-prefix part number = beetle part. This will eliminate the disc/drum question in regards to the MC. When they arrive, I will swap the front drums for the Ghia front discs. However, at this point, it matters little. I will confirm the #, but even if it is for a 70 ghia, I don't have 70 ghi brakes on my car, so I am not sure I agree that it would be fine. If the part # if for a 70 Ghia then you should be fine. Is there a part number on the MC or the box so you can verify what you have? My understanding is that the dual-circuit master cylinders that were used in 1967+ beetles and ghias are the same and will work with either four-wheel drums (as was the case with beetles), front disc/rear drum (as was the case with ghias), or four wheel discs. I don't want to purchase an earlier MC that I will eventually want to replace anyway.ĭoes anybody have any experience with the difference between master cylinders utilizing drum vs disc brakes that might be able to shed light on my dilemma? I can pretty safely assume that the MC that the PO purchased was for a 1970 Ghia, and thus for Disc brakes. I have a set of stock Ghia discs, but was planning to wait until my son could purchase dropped spindles first.Īt this point, I may need to go ahead and do that sooner. Our plan has been at some point to replace the drums with discs. However, there is no information regarding switching from discs to drums. I have read many posts about people switching from Drum to Discs and the MC working fine in that situation. According to the Bentley, there are different MC's for Drum and Discs. My guess is that some PO before the last PO swapped out the Ghia front suspension with a bug front suspension. Should have had stock disc brakes, but he has drums up front. I was getting ready to spend some time doing brakes today, but after reading in the Bentley, I am delaying until I have further information.įirst of all, my sons Ghia is a 70. When I bought the car for my son, it came with new shoes, hoses and MC to install. PO said he had done everything he could do but was unable to solve the problem. OK, my sons 70 has brakes that work, but they pull a bit and the pedal is sometimes a bit soft.
